Dear ,

we warmly invite you to Ju Young Kim's solo exhibition Incognito Apartment at Kunsthalle Mannheim. The artist has transformed the Kunsthalle Mannheim’s STUDIO space into an Incognito Apartment, where familiar objects from the domestic sphere meet components from the industrial context — in this case repurposed airplane parts. The exhibition opens on 4 June at 7 pm.

What would it be like to experience the state of speed and constant change as a place of inner contemplation? This is exactly what Ju Young Kim invites us to do. With her works, she draws our attention to these situations: the spaces of transfer in our existence, journeys as threshold states, places between departure and arrival. These are transient states between past and future, presence and absence. At the Kunsthalle Mannheim, the in-between, which she calls a "temporary momentum", manifests itself in the installation titled Incognito Apartment.

"The curves, surfaces and forms – often designed for aerodynamics – began to echo the flowing, organic lines of Art Nouveau. It was unexpected, but the connection felt intuitive and natural. Both aesthetics, in their own way, draw from nature and carry a certain elegance, one born from efficiency and movement, the other from stillness and decoration. That meeting point between invention and ornament, speed and pause, is where the work starts to speak. What fascinates me even more is how these two aesthetics relate to time. Art Nouveau is often associated with permanence and legacy, for instance, villas, churches, places meant to last."

Excerpt from the interview between the exhibition curator Dorotea Lorenz and Ju Young Kim.
